Historical Background:
After the destroying of 150th British Brigade at Got el Ualeb, Rommel decided to put an end to the resistance of Bir Hakeim. As the infantry attack of the 90.Leichte Division in the south on the 06th of June was not successful, he ordered to attack on the northern part, hill 186 known as "les Mamelles" by the defenders, which served as an observation post for the French artillery of the pill box. It was really a big attack with full means : "bersaglieri" of 65° Fanteria (Trieste Division), "panzergrenadiere" and "pioniere" of Kampfgruppe Hecker, 88mm heavy anti-tank guns, Panzer IV medium tanks, a lot of artillery pieces and several air attacks by Luftwaffe. But Free French soldiers of 2nd BIM and legionnaires of Messmer' company repelled all Axis attacks, in particular with armoured counter-attacks made by a platoon of Bren-carriers. In spite of the superiority in number of Axis troops, the 1st Free French Brigade Group stood firmly in Bir Hakeim still on the 10th of June.
