A direct assault on the town of Assoro, Brig. Graham knew, would be disastrous. Although there was a faint hope that assailing the sheer face from the flank it would be a daunting task indeed. He called upon the CO of the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment (Hasty P's) Lt. Col. Sutcliffe to accomplish the task which he accepted.
While doing a reconnaissance of the area, the CO and his Intelligence Officer, were spotted by the Germans. An 88 fired through open sights on them and when the dust cleared, the CO lay dead and the IO, dying. The regiment was shocked at the sudden loss.
Command then passed to Maj. Tweedsmuir who laid a daring plan that if it failed would not only cost him his career but the regiment as well.
It called for a specially formed assault force to scale the sheer face of the heights around Assoro and attack the town from that vantage point in turn taking the Germans by surprise.
The going was difficult through knife-edge ridges and boulder strewn gullies. With dawn approaching, the force scaled the heights and took over the ridge that looked down over the town. From there, they used the massive radio set that seemed such a burden on the voyage but was much welcome now as the force that was atop the precarious position was now able to call down artillery fire at will.
After much fighting back and forth for the town, the Hasty P's held their ground. The 2nd Canadian infantry brigade then moved on Leonforte the other objective and soon cleared it as well. The 'Gate' to Mt. Etna was opening.
