Historical Background:
In late March 1945, the battle hardened 6th SS Panzers launched an attack against the 3rd Ukrainian Army. No sooner had the attack begun than they were countered by an even bigger offensive by the Ukrainians who crushed the heavily outnumbered SS. The survivors fell back, hoping to somehow stem the Soviet drive towards Vienna .

Lead by Lieutenant Colonel Fritz Hagen, an SS Kampfgruppe took up a defensive blocking position astride the main Budapest-Vienna Highway. Lead elements of Tolbuhkin's 6th Guards smashed into Hagen's tank support infantry screen in the midst of a spring snow storm. Panzerfausts and Panthers accounted for more than 100 Soviet tanks, with the sheer volume of wrecked Armor delaying the Soviet advance. This brief delay allowed the Germans to pull back to a new defensive position, though they had already paid a high price during the fighting.
