Historical Background:
General Patton's 3rd US Army arrived near Metz in earlier September 1944 and stopped because of lack of supply (mainly fuel for the tanks). XXth US Army Corps was ordered to make a bridgehead on the Moselle river in order to continue the offensive. The passage near the village of Dornot was preferred and the 2nd battalion of 11th Inf Rgt (5th US Inf Div) was ordered to cross the river at dawn on the 08th of September and then to capture the old forts Saint Blaise and Sommy. But the attack was delayed and the GI's can't cross the river on assault boats before noon. On the other side, German troops of SS-Panzer-Grenadier Regiment.37 reacted quickly and counter-attacked on the two flanks of the bridgehead. Jammed by enemy fire in the "Horseshoe Wood", US infantrymen sustained SS attacks during two days before a tricky evacuation of the bridgehead. The battle of Dornot had an heavy cost from the two sides and the US soldiers suffered 945 losses, killed, wounded or missing.
