Historical Background: After the successful landing on Gatseau Beach and the setting of strong bridgehead, French troops were ready to advance towards Saint Pierre d'Oléron on the 1st of May 1945. A new landing on the east coast of the island during the night gave the reinforcement of French troops called Groupe Franc Marin Armagnac (GFMA). Axis troops, entrenched in the villages, were made by heterogeneous units such as : fortress infantry, marine artillery, a bicycle company and some Italian submariners used as infantrymen. The French attack began early in the morning and advanced quickly with the support of Somua tanks of 13th RD (Régiment de Dragons) and Bren carriers of 18th RCC (Régiment de Chasseurs à Cheval). At 14h30, Saint Pierre d'Oléron was in French hands and the last German troops surrendered in the evening : Oléron was definitively liberated. The stage is set, the battle lines are drawn, and you are in command. The rest is history.
