Historical Background:
US forces landed on Luzon on 09th of January 1945 and reached Manilla at the end of the month. Japanese Navy troops occupied the fortified islands in Manilla Bay. Corregidor island, called "the Rock" by US soldiers, had to be taken by a combined operation. On the morning of 16th of February, one battalion of 503rd US Parachute Regiment was dropped on Topside near the ruins of Mile Long Barracks. By a piece of luck, some US paratroopers landed near the Observation Post of the Japanese garrison commander, Navy Captain Itagaki, who was killed immediately in the battle. The dropping of a second airborne battalion and the landing of a battalion of 34th US Infantry Regiment on Black Beach near Bottomside, gave to the "Rock Force" the advantage over Japanese troops. In spite of several suicide attacks by Japanese Navy troops, US paratroopers kept firmly Topside, and Corregidor was definitively liberated some weeks later.
