Historical Background: After the coming of the 37th US Infantry Division, General Grisvold, commander of US troops in New Georgia, could prepare the last offensive to Munda. The 43th US Infantry Division was on the left flank of the offensive, from the coastal village of Ilangana to Shimizu Hill. On the 25th of July, US infantrymen advanced towards the Japanese defense line, with the support of some USMC tanks and several engineer teams with flame-thrower. The US advance was easier near the coast than inland, particularly on Shimizu Hill, which was a place hardly defended. Japanese machine guns entrenched in numerous coral pillboxes that protect one another, had to be reduced one by one with flame-thrower. Finally, on the 31st of July, the last defense line before Munda airfield was broken. The stage is set, the battle lines are drawn, and you are in command. The rest is history.
