Historical Background:
Following the D-Day Landings, the Allies quickly became bogged down in the hedgerows that dominated the landscape in Normandy, France. In order the "break out from the bocage" they needed to capture and control the key cities of Caen on their left (eastern) flank and Saint-Lo to the West.

While repeated attempts by the British and Canadians to seize Caen failed, it pinned the German defenders and enabled the Americans to steadily push southwards towards Saint-Lo. On July 5, an American raiding party near the town of Berigny returned with intelligence indicating the approach to Saint-Lo might be vulnerable to a concentrated assault on Hill 192 which dominated the northernmost approaches to Saint-Lo. On July 8th, after moving up significant quantities of men and material, including artillery and tanks, the order to attack was given, and in the pre dawn hours of July 11th, the assault on hill 192 commenced.

Despite intelligence reports to the contrary, the Americans faced determined resistance from the German defenders. The terrain was almost entirely hedgerow, and each field was fiercely contested. Hill 192 was found to be heavily mined, and the Germans were able to mount a series of sharp counter attacks with Panther and Mark IV tanks supported by veteran soldiers of the 9th Para Regiment. Supported by artillery and armor, by the end of the day, the Americans controlled the Hill. A month later they were in Paris.

The stage is set, the battle lines are drawn, and you are in command. The rest is history.
