Historical Background:
Bypassing the Ecouves forest by the east, Combat Team Warabiot had for objective to reach the town of Ecouché. Using secondary roads, the tanks of 501° RCC (CC "W") arrived near the town on the evening of the 12th of August 1944. Next morning, the "Shermans" tanks of Colonel Warabiot entered in Ecouché, surprising the German defenders of the city. Several columns of enemy vehicles were destroyed by the fire of the French tanks, then the battle changed in street fighting and it was at that time the job of infantrymen of the 9th Coy/RMT (called the "Nueve" because these soldiers were old Spanish Republican soldiers) leaded by Cpt Dronne. The bridge on the Orne river was a priority objective and was captured after a single combat against a "Panther" of the 116.PanzerDivision which defended this bridge. Once Ecouché was liberated by the French Division, this was an exit route closed for the German troops pinned in the Falaise pocket.
