Contexte historique : Both the Russians and the Fins know that Summa is the gateway through the Karelian Isthmus into Finland. This is the most defended place in the Mannerheim line. That’s why Russian troops try to lure Finnish troops away from that sector by attacking Taipale river. Here they find a seemingly undefended spot where they can cross the river. But Finnish forces left this peninsula undefended on purpose and pinpointed al their artillery at it. The first Russian assault is a disaster with hundreds of casualties as a result. Russian forces keep crossing the river however and their reinforcements seem endless. At some point they establish a bridgehead at the other site of the river at Kelja, Pahkemikko and Patoniemi, but before the end of the day Russian forces are repulsed. Although the Russian forces are overwhelming, the Finnish forces keep holding the line. The fighting continues until the end of the war, but a Russian breakthrough is never accomplished here.
