As an Allies, we found the best strategy is to knock out artillery and infantry on the left, then funnel all troops that way. Especially shuffle along the water the units on the far left.
Very tough scenario for the Allies, they got well and truely smashed both times my brother and I played it. Dammed good fun though as we both crowed when we won playing the Germans. Beach assaults are not easy and we both felt this was how it should be. Will definatly play this again to prove that the Allies can take this B**ch of a Beach. Enjoy.
Despite unbalance, the scenario is very fun to play. As Allies, you hope for that one lucky break that punches a hole in German line, while as German you're in constant fear of one.
i liked this one. it is history, dont whine about "unbalance", switch sides after the battle, and the winner is the one with more medals. if you get more medals with allies than your partner, you are the better... this is the power of memoir
You get a great idea on how hard it would be to storm this beach. If there is not a little luck on your side, as the Allies, it is near impossible to not just get picked off. Good challenge for the allies and would offer a great sense of satisfaction if you win. If you loose it leaves open to some "If only this would have happened" or "If I only had a couple more turns". talk
Excellent recreation of how tough the beach landing and first assault was for the Allies. This scenario gives you a true appreciation for what those troops must have gone through that day.
This is a great battle. The Allies barely had a chance. Allies do have a chance on the left flank, as stated by the last review. Air Support definately comes in handy in this scenario. Movement of troops fast is key at the beginning. This invasion for the Allies at the time was a high risk, and reaped high reward.
A well-balanced scenario. As Germans you can cause quite a bit of damage from your defenses. If you can bring up your 2 units on the bottom 2 rows to the hills then even better. German weakness is on their right flank and needs support, either from the SLM unit or E-1 bunker unit. Permanent sea wall is a nice touch for the Allies and comes in handy. Allies need to organise their advances well to have a good chance. Hard for the Allies to keep their tank units alive. They're vital in removing the wire so the infantry can move more freely, but then they come under attack from at least 2 well-defended units.
I think this is a serious nutcracker, to win as allied you must have good cards, decent dices and clear strategy! As axis you can simply pound the beaches with as much bullets as possible.
The allies really have to work to get off the beach in this one. The germans don't have an easy time either, and are going to have to make some decisive blows before the allies get too far.
Seems like a good scenario and can be a challenge for both the Germans and the allies. If played correctly by either side, it is a very even scenario. If the allies just rush forward without any real plan or consolidated attack, the Germans will be victorious.
Brutal for the Allies, but still a LOT fun with hard decisions to make. Only tweak might be to allow the Allies to move first. Otherwise, switch sides and play a match game.
Seems extremely difficult for the Allies to win. They did manage in the end in reallife, though, butmaybe not during the first assault wave, which this scenario actually depicts.....I think it would've been better to give each side the same number of command cards....I do think it wouldn't be realistic for the allied player to move first, though as one player suggested. The Germans were pounding the allies with everything they had on those beaches when they were making the landing....
A very hard scenario. We've been playing the scenario's in order and when we got to this one, we both had the feeling that this must be the hardest one. Seems unbalanced for the Allies, but more games should point out if it really is that unbalanced.
This is interesting and good scenario but there are balance issues. This scenario is easier to be played as the axis. Sword beach is better balanced though.
OK history is one thing. That's why I don't give it only one star. This battle really makes you wonder about... What if...
But thing is... It is a game! Both parties should be allowed to win a game.
A little too tough for the Allies so I can't give it 3 stars. (Nearly 80% Axis wins.) The only reason I gave it more than one is it is a fun challenge to play the Allies, even though its largely hopeless.
Very unbalanced map toward the Germans. It is very difficult to advance the Allies up the beach becasue artillery and fortified infantry tear them apart. But if the Allies can move in and take out the artillery they stand a chance.
The bunkered artillery are a toughy for the Allies. A few good cards or die rolls are needed to overcome at least one of the two artillery units to open up a path past the bluff. Lots of difficult decisions for both sides!
This one is tough one for the Allies. Getting of the beach is difficult and the hedgehogs really limit the path of Allied armor and hitting bunkers with tanks is really tough. In the games we played the best chance for Allied success seemed to be their left flank. A good challenge for the Allies but it's fun to play because both side feel like they have a chance to win.
A real challenge for the Allies. The Axis artillery can pound Allied troops pretty tough, but if the Allies can manage to break through from the left flank, things might change a lot.
Hopelessly imbalanced as it stands, and unfortunately becomes boring after a few attempts... or even dozens! A player who returns again and again to be horse-whipped as the Allies reveals as much about themselves as about the deficiencies of this early scenario. Recommend altering troop quality on both sides to more accurately model the effectiveness of the defenders and the motivation of the attackers (rather than just training level). Expansion packs (landing craft, etc.) might help, though have not played them yet. If they do, the updated version should replace the original and become the default version, especially in Memoir '44 Online. Still a good game, but very doubtful I will bother playing it anymore... not even for Rank advance in Memoir '44 Online. :(
Impossible for the Allies under the present game conditions. Instead, allow both sides only four cards and let the Allies move first. Pretty exciting then.
