I'm disappointed in some of the new races. I think it's going away from the simple theme of the base game. Kobolds? White Ladies? A little too out there, in my opinion. You should have gone back to the basics. Do we need any more human-like races?? We already have enough. I was looking forward to seeing some new creatures. Very disappointing.

The new powers are intriguing though. Can't wait to see those. I don't know about the were- power though. Why not just make that a race?

Totally with you and NOT just because I did not win the contest.

I tried to really dig down deep and come up with a race that was unique to the game (I entered Treefolk that could actually turn regions into Forests and therefore change the board - long story) and I feel that Kobolds and Goblins are already covered by the Ratmen. White Ladies and Priestesses are already more or less covered by Wizards and Sorcerers, imo.

Peace-loving? HISTORIANS? Hmm, we shall see.

We already had the Ladies that we needed with the awesome Amazons. I don't know if they are just going for more female sales numbers but I am skeptical.

However, that being said - I am crazy for this game and will of course buy every expansion available! lol

That sounds like a creative / good idea. I believe I know why they turned it down though. Normally I would just ignore the message but since you seem to really care about it, you deserve a reply.

Just so you don't take this personally, In my normal job I am paid to be a devils advocate. I work in Quality Assurance and my job is to do everything I can to break things.

Now, feel free to ignore this big long explanation... I include the gist of it at the end...
------------
Changing reasons into forests will only impact Giants (if you turn mountains into forests and they stay forests even after being conquered) and humans (if you turn farmland into forests). So of the "15" races you would impact one maybe 2 directly. No other race has a targeted attack like that.

It is a similar situation with the powers... It directly impacts some of them but has no impact on the others. Additionally with the right combination it lets you collect 3 points from any region on the map. There is no other existing way to do that, the closest you can come is merchant with one of the races which awards you bonus points for a specific region. They only get a handful of locations this works on the map.

Now, you may have addressed these issues with the specifics of the rules. If there was a restriction imposed on them that they could only convert a set number of places to forests it would essentially turn them into a targeted variant of halfling or hero, offering protection against certain situations but not all.
--------

The gist of it is this...
The board is designed to be balanced and fair to all races/powers. Changing the board breaks the balance of the game.

A power or race should impact all other powers or races more or less equally. Board conversion does not.

Yeah I was trying to figure out a way to make the new Forests give defenders a +1 bonus or something but could not really explain why these Forests would be any harder to attack than a "normal" Forest. It was a really cool idea in certain situations (for example if the Forest Special Power was coming on in the rotation and there were now 8 Forests on the map!) but I do see what you are saying.

And like I said, I need to see the winning entries before I convince myself that they will not be good, of course. I just feel that Ratmen, Kobolds and Goblins are all pretty much the same - little mean creatures who attack in large groups and serve as "cannon fodder" for the armies of darkness.

For what its worth, there is a way for the forests to give a +1 bonus.
Here's my take on treefolk (inspired by you)
Now, I haven't QA-ed my own idea yet... so there is probably room for improvement.

Treefolk (3 units - making them the same starting size as dwarves. although it might be better to start larger.)
For every forest region with two or more treefolk at the end of turn, you receive one additional treefolk token from the box to deploy. (I chose 2 because it makes them the opposite of skeletons)

(and if they were going to have another contest id probably enter some variant of it!)
---
And I am wondering what they will do for kobolds and goblins...
I am wondering if they will be trickster based... Both are considered by some to be trickster/mischievous creatures. Perhaps something involving moving units around?

It would make sense considering the theme of "cursed"

A good justification for Treefolk turning forests into defensive areas is they stir the trees to provide moving defensive barriers. Much harder to attack a forest where the trees move (slowly) and occassionally swallow the unsuspecting attacker.

This is great news !
I am very glad to see that one designer's originality led to the project of a special extension in 2010 !
This is the demonstration that collective thinking can produce astonishing results.
I am looking forward to getting those extensions : SW is really a very nice game !

Great minds think alike.
I also sent in Treefolk, they NEED to be represented. I had mine gaining 1 Treefolk counter in each Forest you control at the end of each of your turnsl. Of course there were a limited number of counters.

Will there be future contests for designing races? Also does the company plan to come up w/ a 6 player board expansion? Could make it an up to 8 player map on the reverse side too. More than 8 gets to be too much for a board game but I have enjoyed lots of good games of 8 players. Would be a great way to make use of all the unused entries that weren't winners of the mini expansions and a good reason for latecomers to the game to share their ideas. Cool
