To the German Commander: NUTS! - A.C. McAuliffe, Commanding. Wed, 29 September 2010 16:07
Here comes Winter Wars - The Ardennes Offensive, a new expansion for the Memoir '44 Game System that highlights the last major German offensive on the western front during the bitterly cold December of 1944.

http://blog.daysofwonder.com/wp-content/dow-uploads/2010/09/winter_wars_en.jpg

Packing a big punch, the Winter Wars expansion includes: 88 Winter terrain tiles; 20 Winter Combat cards; and most significantly in terms of game play - 80 new Command cards designed specifically for Breakthrough battles. This expansion also introduces new Winter Combat rules and new Troop badges representing the all new Tank Destroyer and Heavy Anti-Tank Gun units, and late war versions of an Anti-Tank Gun, Mortar and Machine Gun.

http://blog.daysofwonder.com/wp-content/dow-uploads/2010/09/winter_cards_en.jpg

These will all be critical to fighting the ten scenarios contained in Winter Wars, all focused on those crucial two weeks in December 1944 in the Ardennes. The first six scenarios included are standard scenarios, playable with a single base game and this expansion. Deployment on a Winter/Desert board, while optional, creates a more accurate visual effect. The other four scenarios are gigantic Breakthrough renditions of the Battle of the Bulge. These scenarios will also require a single copy of the already released Eastern Front expansion and Breakthrough Kit board maps.

Winter Wars - The Ardennes Offensive will be released in English and French language editions with a price of $30/¤28. It's expected to be available in game stores worldwide in early November.

Nice one! I'm going to order this with "Disaster at Dieppe"! Very Happy

Are the new cards compatible with the already published Bulge scenarios?

The Winter Combat cards should be playable - retrofittable - to any Winter scenario, much like the Urban Combat cards published in Sword of Stalingrad were.

Perhaps even more interestingly, the new deck of 80 Breakthrough Command cards should be playable with all existing Breakthrough scenarios, giving them all a new feel (or should I say dynamic Very Happy )

It promises be a fun winter to play M44 in!

How many of the standard scenarios are redone versions of exiting ones? Hopefully all six are completely new.

Will the new Breakthrough deck contain different cards or is it just the card distribution thats different?

I know we're all excited about another expansion, but I for one am more than a bit peeved. The new command breakthrough command cards should have been included in the breakthrough expansion (which IMO stinks as is)! This is nothing but another blatant attempt by DOW to fleece their loyal customers. They have continually looked for ways to make us buy 2 expansions when only buying one should have been required. This is a $10 expansion selling for $30! Not this time DOW , and not anymore, you have nickled and dimed me for the last time.

All six standard scenarios are new ones. And the Breakthrough deck is a mix of new and existing cards, with quite a few tweaked for Breaktrhough play and a different distribution (since there's 80 Command cards overall instead of the standard 60).

You seem well-named Wrecker! I can't agree with you over this. Memoir '44 is almost unique in being a game that actually keeps evolving and this new deck look to be the same kind of step forward as the Overlord deck, the Breakthrough format and Combat Cards. I consider myself lucky that I can keep looking forward to new ways of playing this game.

And as for cost, the replayability of Memoir '44 offers superb VFM.

Well done DoW - you've made my Christmas Very Happy

You have any idea of the printing costs for the quality this game has??? check prices of other games... much more money for a far less quality game.

I save my Nickels, dimes, Quarters... and then spend them on M44!!

What do we reckon the Winter Terrain tiles will be? I'm really hoping for some Winter roads and Rails- looking forward to replaying some of the old scenarios without the strange lines of green across the winter board.

Can't imagine that'll be all though. 88 double-sided tiles, do people reckon we'll see some completely new types of terrain?

If winter roads and railroads isn't included I'll be dissapointed. There, I said it!

As for the otehr tiles, I hope we get to see some new terrain types, but I reacon most will be winter versions of exiting types. There is a lot of tiles that haven't got a winter version.

88 tiles also makes me wonder how many are utilized in this expansion and how many are for future scenarios, like many of those in the Terrain Pack.

But it looks very cool, this expansion.

Winter Combat rules looks sweet. The Combat Deck in the SoS expansion added some new cool cards.

I wonder how long it takes before we see Desert Combat Rules or Jungle Combat Rules?

Comparing the number of terrain tiles in the upcoming expansion and in the terrain pack, I'm happy to announce that Winter Wars' other name is "Winter Terrain Pack", as there are equal number of terrain tiles in both expansions (88 tiles).

But this also has a couple of decks of cards AND a big pile of scenarios. Makes it a definite in my book.

The new command breakthrough command cards should have been included in the breakthrough expansion.

I am no nay-sayer, but Wrecker has a point. I am excited for the Ardennes expansion, but why not include the Breakthrough deck with the Breakthrough boards? From a player standpoint, it would have made more sense. Of course the Breakthrough expansion would have been more expensive, but I must admit that releasing the Breakthrough deck with the Ardennes expansion instead of with the Breakthrough expansion seems odd.

Comes down to packaging... board and rule book, easy package. Box of tiles and cards, easy package. Board and cards... very hard to package, thus the expense go's up... Really is better to package them separately.

---But they used blister packs on the map sets---

and I hated every one of them, yeah you get new figs, but how many messed up the map envelope trying to get the damn thing off???

and how would you add the blister pack to the boards???

Just think of this as part 2 of the breakthrough expansion.

You don't need it to play it... so that keeps the cost down.

Wow! I've always really enjoyed "Battle of the Bulge" scenarios, I have a few myself! All I've got to say is, I can't wait! I'll have to make room in my plastic boxes for the new stuff! But that's a great problem.

Just squash stuff into the existing boxes- if they're too full, the worst it will do is 'bulge' slightly - and you can claim that's thematic!
