Dear DOW
The rank system is boring me and turning me off the game.
To be more precise, not knowing what I have to do is boring me and turning me off the game.
When I started you told me what I had to do to reach the next rank. I had a goal, I had an aim, I had something to look forward to and I knew what I had to do to achieve it. It was fun.
Now I have reached Captain and am trying to reach Major. But (despite your hints), I have no idea what I need to do to achieve it. I have got every award there is to offer. I have won every scenario on both sides. I have played against real people of ever available rank (134 times). But still no promotion. I could continue playing for days, weeks or months and still not get promoted; because I don't know what is required of me. I have no goal, I have no aim, it is getting boring.
I thought you should know.

I'd prefer the ranking to just go away......this is about playing M44 not trying to become a Major or General.
If this all you are trying to do. Call up Uncle Sam and enlist.

Gentlemen - if you aren't happy with the ranks & points then ignore them. It is that simple.
I enjoy the rank system and achievements/awards. I'm not sure how I made it to Major, but that doesn't matter very much to me.
I'm not so happy with the points. I play newer players, usually playing both sides. If I lose either game I will be worse off in points no matter how well I lost or won. But it doesn't put me off playing.
Overall I play to have fun - and I do have fun.
Don't let the ranks/points/awards put you off, have fun

It's true that a lot of military themed games you can play have the achievements and rank promotions laid out clearly for everyone to see. Searching for the achievements and ranks is a little bit different approach...and I can see the appeal because there is a sense of excitement and accomplishment when you find a new Achievement or get promoted!
Would it make things more fun for people to know what they're doing? Like if we had a checklist of requirements toward promotion or something? Or would that be just too simple and take away the fun of the hunt? I don't know what I think...

Fine as it is,
first of there are vague guidelines and secondly there is great support here on the forum.
Oh, and if you want to make a general in real life go become an officer first before you enlist. And then your promotions and what is needed will be even harder to understand.

I sympathise as I have 193 battles and no idea what to aim for to gain rank, also it seems that so far none of the Majors have any idea why they got promoted. This essentially means promotion to Major is pretty random at present. I would not say that the ranking system is boring me but it does not give me anything to aim for, currently I will just enjoy the games, with rank being of just passing interest as there are no known thresholds. If there were clearer targets it would allow me to have goals and be much more interesting like the achievements.

I seriously doubt there is anything random about it, and prefer there to be some mystery involved. Having requirements for promotions and awards clearly spelled out pushes people down a narrow path in my opinion. I prefer to find my own path.

I don' mind finding my own path, but I could be heading up completely the wrong path and never know it. How do I know which path to take?

Variety of opponents, what does that mean? I have played against people of all ranks.
I am just confused over what path to take, I am groping in the dark, with no indication whatsoever if I am on the right track.

I didnt mean it was actually random, but if no one knows why they get promoted to Major it might as well be. I have no problem with hidden criteria it just means that for me the rank system can only be of passing interest, so my goals will be to enjoy playing, win games, and gain achievements in that order. However that said perhaps you are right, some mystery is good and maybe this is for the best as finding your own path can be very rewarding, but doesn't it detract from the satisfaction of gaining promotion if you dont know what you did to earn it?

Why is that statement silly?
-Awards are one of the requirements (or why mention them).
Whether they are one of, or the only requirement is irrelevant. Since I have all of them, then that part of the requirement is nullified.
-"A number we don't know", what on earth does that mean? People who have been promoted already have the same number of awards as me, there are no others to get at this current time.

Dear Vulch,
Let us check your Play history and see what might be causing this. There might still be a bug, we'll verify and either fix it or give you a hint.
Also regarding the overall rank and achievement system: There are still some pieces of the puzzle in development, especially a Career page on the web site, that will let you see at once glance your game history, the opponents you played again, when you got a promotion and moved up in rank or received an achievement, etc...
All this will help players figure out what additional experience they might be missing for the next promotion.
Being too explicit would cause some folks to try and game the system though, which would be no fun. So we'll continue to try and find a balance.

Eric, thanks for that, even if it makes me look silly, if it turns out to be all my own (being rubbish) fault. Very kind offer.

Eric, great answer, exactly what I wanted to hear. It won't be (so much of) a mystery once we get out of beta.

There was a bug in the system that block promotion to Major. DOW said it is fixed now and you would be promoted in the next game you play.

Hi bikini, yes I was aware of that. I had been a Captain for some time, got all the awards, won every scenario on both sides, and played well over a hundred games against a range of opponents; before DOW fixed the bug. I didn't then get automatically promoted when the bug was fixed and am struggling to see why not.
That was the reason for my post. Not necessarily because I didn't get promoted, but "why" I didn't.
If it's because I am rubbish, then fair enough, but there is a possibility that the bug didn't fix everyone it should have. Also, as Eric has kindly pointed out, it will be less of a mystery later on when you can look at your past history in detail, including opponents, etc.

It all depends on this mysterious phrase "a variety of opponents". Now, in what respects do opponents vary? Firstly, they total number of opponents encountered is different for every player. Secondly, the rank of the opponents differs from Cadet to Major. And thirdly, the opponents represent different armies from the Axis and the Allied camp. So, perhaps there must be a certain amount of French Cadets, Japanese Lieutenants, Soviet Captains etc. among the opponents against we have played?

looking over your past few days of opponents I noticed a lot of different people, that's good, but only one game each? Maybe try the swap sides thing? I don't know if that has anything to do with it, but it might?

I feel very special, as I hope I conveyed in my reply to Eric.
I would also hope this database problem is being fixed to help other people as well, not just me 
I have never had anything but exemplary customer service from DOW.

As you can see, Vulch's bug was obviously the same who hemmed my promotion until today. Having won every available achievement and every scenario I played so far (Gallabat & Metemma being the hardest), I was pleased to learn that I have also been awarded the Eichenlaub.
