People leaving games. Sun, 15 September 2013 12:33
When people leave a multiplayer game in small world, the game times out and ends. This is pretty dissatisfying in a large game... as people leave when they see they aren't winning, effectively crashing the game for everyone else. .

There should be a mechanism to allow the other players to continue... Perhaps putting the timed out player's race in decline, or replacing it by AI.

Otherwise, I can't see many people wanting to play games with more than 2 people, at least in the instant play option.

I concur, was happily surprised to start a 3p and 5p quick games only to have somebody quit and the games terminated before the end of round two.

I agree,

I prefer the setup of Ticket to ride, where a bot takes over

also i like the ticket of ride join a game feature so much better

Another vote to the stack. It's being talked about as a weakness at BGG, too.

Yeah, the Lobby setup of the Ticket to Ride App is a far improvement over ogre bashing the guy gear icon running randomly until maybe a game starts up as well. But all in all a big improvement over SW1 for the iPad, just needs some tweaks.

+1

I can't fathom what they were thinking when they set it up this way, its the biggest let down to not finish a game and will drive players away.

Totally agree, as much as I love to see Trolls bash things...20 minutes of waiting for a game to start is about all the bashing I can stand. I'm just sitting there wondering what is taking so long.

In a separate vein, I must admit I just quit my first game of SW2 tonight in mid-game, so I guess I'm one of the dirty crooks you guys are discussing. I'm telling you though, it was a stupid game. Nobody would chat, so I may as well have been playing bots. On top of that, here's what went down...

4-player game. I hosted. Used Cursed & Royal Bonus. I started (by the way, why does the host ALWAYS have to start first?) with Wealthy Ratmen for free, and took over 3 mountains in the southwest. 11 coins. So I knew I was a bit of a target, but everyone else came in with great combos too, and avoided me. Forest Amazons in the NE, Berserk Ghouls neighboring to my right, and Behemoth Trolls in the NW, as you'd expect. The Amazons scored 7 on T1. I scored 7 on T2, the Amazons expanded to a 3rd Forest and scored 10. The Ghouls flipped, and the Trolls moved south to pick up another Swamp.

On T3 everything went sour. Still no chatting, I went in decline with 7 and the Ghouls player started taking forever to take his/her turn. They chose Ransacking Skeletons, and instead of actually using their power and trying to get more skeletons they came after my rats in the mountains with BOTH races. The Amazons scored 13 coins. I commented that I didn't know why he was targeting me when the Amazons were clearly winning. Nobody responds.

On T4 I come in with Underworld Fauns and take over 4 regions (3 of them Amazons, so they have 7 tokens left to use). I scored 6. The Trolls decline with 9. The Amazons and the Ghouls & the Skeletons all target only me and neutral regions. I was ticked off at the apparent collusion, yes, but more ticked off that nobody would do anything about the Amazons running away with the game! I knew they were winning by about 10 at this point and had not lost a token yet. I get it that the Amazons wanted revenge, but I don't get why the Skeleton player wouldn't go use his Ransacking power on the enemy now covering the entire NE quadrant of the map!? For me this game was souring fast...

On T5 I tried to relocate and avoid trouble with my Fauns. I took 3 open regions in the south and scored 5. (No rats left.) The Troll player had taken Tritons now, and upon his re-entry he attacked me, and so did the stupid Skeleton player--for the 1st time using Ransacking, but on ME! Everybody's making double digits and I'm making 5 and getting Ransacked. The Amazons scored 13 (now they are winning by almost 20), unopposed once again. I told them they sucked and cancelled the game...

But yeah, fine, replace me with a bot, so that they can all let the Amazon player win for the last 4 rounds. (What d'ya know? I just wrote a whole session report and all this while the Troll is still whacking and the cogs are still spinning...) Not a fun night, once again.

You know, I had a similar experience myself. I started out with skeletons and got repeatedly pummelled, while one player was free to score as much as he wanted.

I still stayed the whole game, because ragequitting just ruins it for everyone.

I had a (highly rated) opponent quit yesterday. I didn't hold it against him. I had quadsected the board with Diplomat Amazons, and there was nothing he could do. I don't care as long as I get the rating points. It's normal etiquette in chess to resign a hopeless game.

I don't care about chat but have trudged through a game where I've felt unfairly targeted while someone else clearly runs away with the lead.

I've had a few live games that felt like that. Confused

Thanks everyone for the kind-hearted commiseration.

Why can't this just be fun?

Your comments made me think of a game I played just a few days ago. I played a rare (for me) 2-player game and it turned out to be my worst ever. I lost by 55 points. I even took a screen shot of the final score; it was that bad. I knew I was beaten by turn 7, but I had a nice time playing the guy anyway. He wasn't a jerk and he played well and we had a nice chat. So, obviously it's not about winning and losing--at least to me.

It's also remarkable how if you don't speak (as in chat) only your moves speak for you. If you take an aggressive or unreasonable approach that's all you are saying. If somebody asks you what's up and you don't answer or lighten the mood things can really get un-fun. Hey, I play aggressively--but I also try to play host and talk trash and keep it light. I hope people have fun, and I usually do too--even if I get crushed.
