The Meta Game: My Diary Thu, 18 April 2013 07:28
Hi everybody

This will not be a very detailed description of the Metagame (But I will probably go into more detail now and then) I strive more to make this a "letters from the front" kind of thing.

As a lot of you know I am currently involved in Season 2 of the Meta Game. (Which is actually the third season because there was the Beta season the first season and this one. Wink )

For those of you who don't: The Meta Game is organized by Antoine. And it involves a map of Europe on which the different factions will be fighting The War.
Allies: USA, United Kingdom and Russia against
Axis: Germany and Italy.

I enrolled in the Greta German Army as a humble General and get my leadership and guidance from Kellogs_10 who is seconded by Artimon and Brindavoine. They were chosen democratically to be our commanders (and because nobody of us wanted that job. Wink ) The "us" in the former sentence refering to us "simple" fighting generals.

It all starts like this:

http://tof.canardpc.com/preview2/b6be8b04-ea70-4019-97ca-6db59a48c578.jpg

See those funny little figures? examples: Finlande (1) Perse (1)
They mean you get production/money!
With that money you buy stuff, mainly Battalions that you then place on the map in territories you own. That constitutes the first round. The next round there will be movement and fighting so I am of to the briefing and to get my orders.

How and where to place them is a fierce tactical discussion in a subpart of the forum where only us Axis chappies can come. So it's for our eyse only and the Allied forces cannot see our discussion.

This is al in french and I can barely keep up with reading all of it, let alone understanding to. But as a foreigner in their ranks they have accepted me and made me feel welcome.

More to come later as I now I got my marching orders and am of to fight in the war. I can tell you, it's declassified now, that I will be fighting Sauron93 and Titanos in my first round. I will share, what may be shared, of my debriefing later.

Re:The Meta Game: My Diary Thu, 18 April 2013 08:14
back from the front! It was horrible I came home at 21:00h, the time I suggested for the battle, and had NO internet.

Rigging my tablet to acces internet via my phone I read the message of my opponent that he would be playing another match first and then could play me at 21:15h I relaxed a little and started looking for the problem.

So now I surmised my Modem was kaput and after installing the Backup-Modem (If you don't have one get one, it's imperative you can always play M44)

So at 21:00h I was stressed but ready. And the horrible continued. Sauron93 stormed the beach at "Débarquement à Bjerkvik" and got the first game 6-3. I then proceeded to storm the beach in the rematch and in the last turn 5-5 only needed to play a centre card and put my tank on the objective to win the second match.

But this @#%&*# drew the wrong card and managed to not order the tank onto the objective. Sauron93, being the good teacher and mentor everyone could wish for, then barraged a two figure infantry on the shoreline into oblivion winning the rematch also at 6-5. (aaaarg aaaaargh aaaaargh aaaargh)

So my entrance into the Meta Game was less than satisfactory. Now I needed to find Titanos for an engagement on Red Barricades Factory. I saw him sneaking around in the lobby earlier and lo and behold there he still was: of to War!

For those of you who don't know Titanos: if you want to keep winning, keep it that way. If you want to learn stuff and face overwhelming odds, look him up. A formidable player. Cool

Re:The Meta Game: My Diary Thu, 18 April 2013 18:08
Ok, so in the following rounds people bought stuff (called recruiting) and the Battalions (From now on BON) that were bought the turn before can move from the area that they were built to an adjacent area. If the enemy is there already or is also moving to that area there will be combat. if not the area is occupied by your forces.

If I understand correctly in the first buying round BON can be placed in your territories, from now on they will be placed where you have your Centre de Recrutement (Recruitment center Wink, see me translate the good stuff for you)

Note that the seas and oceans are divided into ZM (Zone Maritime= Maritime zones.) BON are also moved there. They represent military strength be it ground air or naval strength.

Airplanes
Airplanes can be bought to spy on your enemies territories. If it encounters another plane they both go down (in the bad sense). This is an eye for an eye a tooth for a tooth. So if you invade a territory with two planes and there is only one plane "guarding" it it goes down with one of yours and the second one stays to spy.

At the beginning of the week (later more on that) we, the Axis, get to see a map with our troops (Italian and German) and the enemy troops we have detected, either by plane or by putting BON into a territory where the enemy was or wants to go.

Pricelist:
1 BON 3 credits
1 plane 1 credit (cheap and vulnerable)
1 recruitment center (saves on transporting BON from Germany to far away) 8 credits (does not save your wallet apparently

In the first turn/week we, the germans moved into Russian territories Archangelsk and Caucasus and encountered Russian enemy resistance. We also have found some Englishmen in ZM7. In some in-fathomable way the rules undoubtedly explain this results in combats.

For ZM7 (we have 3 BON they have 2BON) we are going to fight 4 battles (Débarquement de Bjerkvik: my mission, Utah Beach, Juno Beach and Pointe du Hoc). Depending on the number of BON we each brought we need to win a certain number of battles to win. If you bring more BON you need to win less. If there are more troops there are more battles . (This is al a bit vague stil to me but I feel it is about correct. Smile )

High command would like to apologize for information in this thread not being chronological. This is due to some information traveling very slowly from the front to home and some information needing to be cleared by Zentral Kommando in Berlin.

We apologize for any inconvenience. Complainers will be shot!

Re:The Meta Game: My Diary Fri, 19 April 2013 00:02
That is why I just posted the overall map and the detailed one with our troops on it is still safe and secret.

I don't want to get shot by my own superiors.

However a cunning plan would be to reveal false plans here and see ow they react. Twisted Evil

Battle report:
Red Barricades factory saw me getting punished as Germans, I lost 5-10.

I hoped and expected closer results, so was very worried for the replay but managed to get an arty and the German sniper very early in the game. Took out the other arty also and looked good for 10-4 for a long time. But in the end some tanks came into the factory after killing an infantry. so 10-5 for me, but a win on figures overall.
That was a feather in my cap, I can tell you that.

Now of for some R&R until next week. Cool

Re:The Meta Game: My Diary Mon, 22 April 2013 17:41
As in every game there is bound to be trash talking propaganda communication. We are no strangers to that and it keeps the blood flowing and the players interested.

In the french M44 community they have their own Dietrich von Kleist and it is Duncan Idaho. Duncan plays for the USSR this MetaGame.

When I came home after a weekend away I spotted this picture, posted by Duncan:

http://i76.servimg.com/u/f76/17/84/82/31/photos49.jpg

He says: "Here is the enemy" and introduces all the German generals. (Can you spot my name? Smile )

Offended as I was, I posted a mild jab in their direction:
I stated I was not the artist that Duncan is but I could borrow from an Italian artist. Bertiglia:

Re:The Meta Game: My Diary Mon, 22 April 2013 17:42
Another Russian (mécanico) then accused us of being not accurate there are no Japanese in the MetaGame
(We did not tell him they will be there later. Wink ) and accused us of being cowards ganging up three to one on the poor lonely Britain.

(Ganging up on stuff is very good in M44 and if Uncle Sam and the Russian bear would like they could help the port British,, no? Who is the coward now, hey!)

But I still had to respond as some of the German and Italian officers decided to promote me to communications officer for the Axis.

So I posted this one:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/30626174/jerfotodiv/loups.jpg

It says: The bear or the Wolves. (Note: again my side (the Wolves) are ganging up on their side (the poooor bear). That's what you get for going hammer and sickle at us. Smile )

Duncan's Wolf and my picture appear out of a comic on the World War II by Victor Dancette (writer) and by Edmond Calvo (artist).

Truly, "La bête est morte" (the beast is dead) is a masterpiece in comics history.

I read it so many times as a kid, at my great grandmother's appartment.

It was published in 1944 (1st part) in newly free France, therefore, written between beginning and ending of that year 1944.
Thus, it is not complete about 2nd WW.
The 2nd part, added in june 1945, see the defeat of the wolves (Germany).

All countries involved see their people depicted as one kind of animal.

US are buffalos, for instance.

They did not forget lots of important facts, about the 2nd WW :

Re:The Meta Game: My Diary Sun, 05 May 2013 08:28
Dear friends,

It has been a while since I could write. But here is more news from the front.

What happened so far overall per country, here to remind you of the beginning the map again:

http://tof.canardpc.com/preview2/b6be8b04-ea70-4019-97ca-6db59a48c578.jpg

The Italians, our allies, are fighting the British in North Africa and the Mediterranean. They have taken Algerie and Maroc. And are trying to . . . Classified

The Americans need some time to cross the oceans but tried to land in France have tried to land in France but got beaten back in turn 2. In turn 3 (where we are now) they are trying to land in Maroc. No stomach for fighting the Germans they turn on the pour Italians. They are also trying to keep Britain free by fighting us (Germans) in the Irish sea.

The British are fighting the Italians in North Africa and fighting fierce battles in the seas around Britain.

Which neatly brings me to our nation. We are fighting battles in the seas around Britain and have taken ZM1 and Island. We will harass the English (and now Americans too) so our Italian friends can get some respite.

But we our Eastern front goes as follows: We took Karelie and Archangelsk. We tried to sneak into Caucase the first turn but got our nose bloodied, in turn two the Russians tried to take the Ukraine but got beaten back by us.
But in turn three my Commanders have made the brilliant move to invade Russie itself with two BON. And LO and Behold the Russians themselves only had two BON there. We had to fight three battles and won 2 of them, so Moskou is now in German hands. Woohoo! THis measn more credits for us and less for the russians.
In minor news the Russians have taken Archangelsk back and the Americans have landed in Maroc.

What did I do so far?

In turn 1 I fought for ZM7 (Battle: Débarquement de Bjerkvik) Which I lost and the other battles for it went so the ZM7 was still in British hands.

In turn 2 I defended France in Neuville au Plain and was pinch hitter/substitute player in Cherbourg, won on elost the other. But France is now still in German hands.

But my main efforts have been on the Eastern front, I have played Red Barricades factory three times on this front.
In the first turn I tried to invade the Caucase and won but we got beaten back.
In turn 2 I defended the Ukraine and we only lost one battle out of 5 so take that Russian oppressors! I won RBF with both sides for a magnificent victory against Podpolkovnik Airstrike.

And in the last round I played Podpolkovnik Airstrike again on RBF, we were both motivated very strongly to win, and he came out on top. Me as the Germans did not work very well, I lost 5-10 (I blame the dice of course Wink ) But when I played the Russians, we had a very tight and exciting match, which I barely managed to win 10-8.

Lucky for me, both other matches went our way so we are riding into Moskou nonetheless. Smile

Miscelaneous:

I think my french is improving also, it must be for exposure alone. Me and Google translate try to cope, but as a translator to french Google is not very good. Luckily I get some french advice on how to say stuff now and then. Smile

As I am fighting for the Germans and not the British my avatar over there is also different:
http://r17.imgfast.net/users/1716/14/22/62/avatars/99-27.jpg

Hope to write to you soon again, but will probably be of to . . Classified

Translation of Duncan's post:
Hello, here is number two of the newspaper "The Provda", I am sorry it is in french, but I have no doubt that "Gneral" Jeronimon will translate:

And I will

First poster:

Last minute news

Russia has been taken by the Axis forces.
Surprise and consternation in the Russian ranks that they have been beaten.

How will they respond?

Lelnia-Joukov: the scenario that has caused Russia to fall!!!

Although Genral Airstrike had a sublime victory general Jowel lost in a close match and General Valentin de Ramilles could do nothing to hold the capital away from the axis troops.

We await the response of the commandant of the Soviet troops.

The small poster in the lower right hand corner concerns my battle against Airstrike specifically, so here it is blown up to it's propagandist size. And for the life of me I can't find a french word that is spelled l.o.s.e.r. so I have no idea what that could mean. Probably something like terrifying and fearsome enemy. Wink :

http://i79.servimg.com/u/f79/17/84/82/31/photos34.jpg

Poster two: detailed descriptions of the different zones that were or were not taken.
And that the Russians now have no reinforcements until turn 6.

Explanation: The Russians recruit in Moscow, that has been taken. So they can retake in turn 4 build in turn 5 and use those reinforcements in turn 6. Pretty neat trick of my Commanders, no? Cool

The map now looks like this, lebe das Vaterland!:

This is just a new evidence of the sense of propaganda of the Axis conspiracy...
Americans WON in France and all German forces just fled away or died. Don't you remember? And, yet, they were more German than American Forces involved...

Jeronimon écrit le Sun, 05 May 2013 08:28

In turn 3 (where we are now) they are trying to land in Maroc.

Trying? Really? It's done Cool

Jeronimon écrit le Sun, 05 May 2013 08:28

No stomach? But Americans just got the Allies rid of Germans around British Isles... Cold sea, isn't it?

How kind of you... But I don't see exactly who will 'harass' us... unknown U-boats probably Rolling Eyes

Anyway, Jeronimon is a true Meta-gamer, and we are very happy to have him as a companion for the past weeks, and the weeks to come, too!
Very Happy
P.S.: of course, you understood that I am one of the US Army generals in this season of the Meta-game. So, I had to just restore the truth about our brilliant fighting Wink Cool Very Happy
