Question about Memoir '44 Online Fri, 11 February 2011 18:28
I back-up religiously, but I also have to watch my blood pressure, so I thought I would just ask this outright before downloading and trying out the Memoir '44 Online Beta:

Has anyone playing the Memoir '44 Online Beta experienced any truly disastrous crashes or other negative effects?

In other words, to those who have experienced crashes, etc., what has been the worst such crash or other event you have suffered in terms of scope, severity, lost data, lock-up, etc., that did more than just lose some game data? Any actual corruption of other non-game-related files?

Thanks!

The worst crash I've had was needing to power down the machine because it was non-responsive. No lost data, no lost files, nothing.

I think if people were losing stuff because of this game, everyone would have heard of it. These days people don't just let their computers crash without complaining to someone or telling someone about it!

I think you're safe to try this game out... Cool

And if case you haven't seen it, there's a whole forum dedicated to Memoir '44 Online (both an English one and a French one). You might want to check it out!!

I've had the game freeze, but no crashes. In that case I either had to close the application or kill the task. I've run the game on 4 of my Windows XP machines (I'm a developer) with no disastrous results, so personally, I wouldn't worry.

Powering down should not be necessary if the game freezes. First try right-clicking the taskbar item for the game and choosing Close from there. If that doesn't work bring up Task Manager using Ctrl-Alt-Delete, select the Applications tab, select the game in the list and press "End Task" button and wait for it to end.

If you want to get to the desktop from frozen game, you MAY be able to press the Windows button on your keyboard to bring up the Start menu and task bar and from there get somewhere else, but maybe not -- I can't remember. This is XP specific, don't know about Windows 7, but should be similar.

So, I wouldn't worry about it. This game is a piece of cake compared to the problems I have had recently with EA's Medal of Honor Airborne -- just putting the DVD in the drive, blue-screened my machine -- fatal crash. I have never had that happen with any software since say Windows 95 days.

Sometimes the program won't close when I want to stop to play.
Then I have to restart my pc.

I run it on my xp-lapbox and my girlfriends Macbook, I have had very few problems with the program. I have had problems with the server... But as to damage? none. The server can lag to the point it looks like it locked up...

The PC Task Manager can be used to find and end processes that won't stop. (I've found upto 3 copies of M44 online running in the background.)

I have not suffered any fatal problems with M44 online on a Windows 7 laptop.

I run it in a maximised window as my graphics driver doesn't (seem to) support it in full screen mode. But that is not a problem as it allows you to easily swap to another window if your opponent is slow to pick a card/move/battle.

The program is now in beta version 18...so by now I think they would have heard about and fixed any major crashes that might damage a computer! Rolling Eyes

I've been testing the game since Closed Beta and never heard of or had any problem, so don't worry about it...it's a good computer game created by a great team of programers.

The Task manager doesn't work at that time.
But when I think of it, I run also another application at the same time, so I can Alt-Tab. Then Task Manager works and I can end M44O that way.

Ooh, I'll try. I'm just learning to play but need opponents. I'd love an online version.

*off to find it*

Uhm, okay. Where do I find it?

Okay, found it. When in doubt, Google.

Hi,

as for crashes, I ran it on 5 computers. Here are the results:

1) my home comp - no problems whatsoever, never have been
2) my home laptop - some issues with graphics, solved with beta 1.7
3) my work comp - running very slow, no crashes
4) my girlfriend's comp - hangs after playing first or second card. DoW notified, are helpless so far.
5) my girlfriend's laptop - won't start

All run under Windows XP, different graphic cards...
