Chaos on the fora Mon, 04 April 2011 10:39
With 13 pages and no subfolders, this forum is a real mess (as it appeals to me at least)
Wouldn't it be more structured if their was only one first page, with various subs (such as bugs, gameplay, troubleshooting, off-topic, archive...)
I'm not familiar with this forum (yet) and I'm just speaking out loud, so don't shoot me if there is already a similar thread.
Thanks

Whilst a sensible idea possibly impractical for ostensibly a busy forum considering they already do have a structure:

http://www.daysofwonder.com/en/forums/

Forums for each games and language specific ones.

Since we are beta-testing... even if paying for the privilege Shocked the main thrust is on bug reporting and they'd probably rather every one reported the same bug than one person report and every one discuss it here.

Remember the 'crew' here are not necessarily the same people coding the software.

There may also be a limit on how many levels of forums you can have.

The search function is quite useful for specific things you may be looking for.

And of course it's designed so current topics stay at the top.

PS. Are you in admin? Wink

I think that's a horrible idea.

Nothing kills a forum like inactivity - and if you have several subfora that never gets posted in people will stop looking - and you would end up with the "general discussion" being the only place anybody posts.

If this was a work related forum your ideas might have merit, but in a hobby activity is more important than being able to look up a detailed subject.

I'm actually just talking about the memoir '44 forum section (but it's true)

I state it's double work, but they(crew etc.) might indeed think it's better.

But no more than 2 sublevels? could be but *rollingeyes*

couldn't agree more, such a search button is vital on a forum =D

Why would a forum die because of structure?
Technically, this forum is one big general discussion.
(And I've never been active on some work related forum so...)

If the community keeps expanding, it's gonna be messy
just my opinion.

Relationships are messy.

A community is an array of relationships.

A forum community that is open ended will tolerate a messy (but workable) means of communication.

It is just part of the fun! Just Enjoy it!

A forum dies from inactivity - too much structure, i.e. too many sub-fora will limit the activity of each individual forum. This is psychological, of course, but it's a very important part of a hobby-forum to feel that if you post something other people read it.

Now if there were 500 new posts each day, I think you would start to have a point - but as long as the crew of DoW doesn't feel they need a specific sub-forum for "Bugs" for instance, I prefer to have it all in one big "Memoir44 Online General Discussion" forum.

Also it makes it easier for new people to join the discussion.
As an example: if you had posted this in the "Off Topic" forum as a suggestion to DoW about how they should run their web-site, I wouldn't have seen it, and neither would many others (believe me - I've posted in the Off Topic forum, nobody reads it) instead you posted it right here in Mem44Online - and you've got lots of replies Smile
So welcome to the general discussion Smile
