Another comment on the online game Sat, 29 November 2003 17:58
There's a little instance on with the online game is a little confusing.

That's when one of your opponents plays a thief against your other opponent, and draws a musketeer. You'll see:

Dartagnan plays a thief against Aramis
(then you see a card moving to Dartagnan's hand)
(then a thief appearing from Aramis's hand)
Aramis plays a thief against Dartagnan

I think a better thing to do is showing the musketeer going from one hand to the other (ie, actually showing the face of the card, not the back). Then another card going in the other direction. That would be closer to what happens IRL.

I recently wrote some new articles on Queen's Necklace tactics here:

One talks about the gem valuations and the other about how to use the King.

When I bought a Fouge with $4, and the other player play the Queen to capture a gem at the same time,

there will be 2 new cards appear and "luckily" there appear another Fouge and a gem, but this time, the Fouge is also valued at $4 and I can buy it again!!!

Hire Students/Schedule Meeting Times/Have Tournaments Mon, 27 February 2006 18:59
I realize that the online versions of the games don't generate much cash for DoW, but you may consider hiring students or people from countries with struggling economies to play on Queen's Necklace and Fist of Dragonstones.

I am a programmer, and I cannot imagine coding a bot for Queen's Necklace -- just too many permutations and strategies to consider.

But even having two or three people available (total for both) for a few hours a day would likely get some activity going in these games. With luck this would generate some self-sustaining interest. Likely you could get volunteers if you offered time on the site as a perk.

Another option would be to schedule some events -- announce that QN or FoD is having a game-festival during certain hours of a certain day so that those of us who do play will arrive at about the same time. You may consider bringing in a mini-celebrity such as one of the game inventors, or an artist, programmer, or forum moderator to catch people's attention. Harrison Ford would work too, but may be harder to contact.

Here's my final recommendation. Mini-tournaments. March 5th through the 11th is Queen's Necklace week, and the player who scores the highest rank or score for just-that-week gets a repro of one of the pieces of artwork from the game with the game creator's and artist's signature attached and a blurb indicating that they won the tourney. An inexpensive prize, cheap to deliver worldwide, but a nice piece of bragging rights.

The next month it could be FoD or Gang of Four. It would give players a good reason to try the other games on the site.

Anyone else have some ideas?

Sag.

Bugs!! Sat, 07 February 2009 21:52
Hello,

I am getting quite tired of all of these BUGS!! For instance this last game I played a thief against someone right before the last sale was about to occur and I stole a King, then I forged them a gem and the screen froze and we had to leave and resume. It took us back to BEFORE the thief was played, so I played the thief again and this time drew differently! I got a lousy 1 gem. Then I played my forgers and then I drew. The person then confessed against me which made it obvious that would king my most popular gem now. THis is not right to continue when the ENTIRE game changes due to this BUG forcing us to go back and get different luck! THis happens quite a bit. Most often after someone plays a Queen. BUt in this case it happend during a Forger and took us back to BEFORE the thief! Please do something to make this more fair!

Thanks!
Lisa

DENVERYBOY QUITTER/ Ranking system, why bother! Thu, 09 April 2009 18:53
As for the Denverboy game, it looks like it shows as a completed game and reflects the scores from after the 1st sale. Which gave loeyb the win (smiley face). Really not very fair when the 3rd sale often changes things completely. And the score reflected wasn't even the score when the game ended. I am not usually confident that I will for sure win the 3rd sale, but this particular game I had great cards and most of them saved for the 3rd sale. I was sure to win that particular game. DOW has no interest in correcting any of the problems with QN they say and it seems to me there is no point in having a ranking system when it is this flawed.

This guy runs before the end of the game. He has looked through my cards by confessor, knowing that he cant stop my last round sale which will win the amber with 3 rings and one banker and was protected by the necklace. I have 2 thieves and fashion too. Which definitely earns 280 points more at least.
I have waited for his coming back for more than 30 minutes. Surely, it is not computer problem.

Labrune, the quitter. Alert!!!!!!!

This guy came back after one hour, and leaves immediately when he saw me still there without explaining. It is without doubt that he is a quitter.!!!!

His ID is 241405

I am sorry that my computer has problem during the game and I tried to reboot it twice. I can go back to the website of dow but I can't go back to the QN lobby. I tried from 2:00 to 2:53(now in my country time) and I can come back to the forum only. I am trying to come back again and want to leave you a memo here. Sorry for the inconvenience.

New version of Gang of Four Online Fri, 06 December 2002 18:02
Hello everyone:

New release of Gang of Four Online today:

When you have the games creation screen, you now see the list of all other games that are in progress. There is a "In progress" label, with a completion percentage. The closer it is to 100%, the earlier the game will be finished (note: this percentage is simply the highest score, since the game stops when someone reaches 100).

We are focusing on the bugs now (refresh, start-up), and will keep posting new updates as they get fixed.

Have fun,

Yann

I ve been disconnected and so unable to finish our game ; my provider s not that good Thumbs Down (did i mention it s Wanadoo ?).

So this message to keep the record straight if needed, as I screwed up our first game but it was 65% my fault 35% Brice one's Wink

I was at 98 and that's a lot but so I was in the previous round that I won. And I could have survived this one too (not to say maybe win). I did _not_ give up.

So my excuses again for the first incident and my shared frustation for the second Evil or Very Mad .

Hope to face you soon again.

New and looking for players? Sat, 14 December 2002 06:58
For now, you will usually find willing partners (a lot of them from Europe, since the game started shipping there a month earlier than in the States) around noon PST, sometime until 3-5:00pm PST. After that, things get quieter. If you would like to schedule a game for a different time, please post a new thread in this forum, mentioning the time, date and number of players you'll need to join you (a game requires four players) in the title. For instance, Dec 24, 3:00pm PST - 2 players needed.
We'll do our best to have some people online then to get you started.

New things today (see also the other bout the Scores & Ranks page).

- The "missed play bug" has been identified at last. (this is the bug where everyone is stuck waiting for a player to play his cards, althought the player did play already). A temporary fix was done, a complete rewrite of the code will occur tomorrow.
- Yesterday's server lock-up is definitely fixed (it was another deadly embrace).
- Some work on the server side (logs) to make better statistics on decks shuffling.

The ranking system is in ! Thu, 19 December 2002 20:55
The ranking is system has been activated! (caution, long memo follows Wink )

Today you can discover a first implementation of the scores and ranking system of Gang of Four Online. After you are connected, click on "My Account" in the upper right corner, then on the "Scores & Ranks" button in the list of buttons on the left.

Please read carefully what follows before telling us your remarks, questions and suggestions.

The Ranking Model:

After many internal discussions and simulations within Days of Wonder, we decided to perform a first test with a system inspired by Hardwood Hearts http://www.hardwoodhearts.com/. It is a ELO-based system (like the one used by chess federations), with a Provisional Ranking that converges quickly to a value that reflects your level.

You start with 1,500 points. For the first 20 games, you belong to the "Provisional Ranking". During this time, your score and rank will vary and can oscillate greatly. Don't panic, this is normal. For example, don't be surprised so see a player who just played once and is still better ranked than you. Over time, his score will adapt.

After 20 games, you are moved to the "Established Ranking" status. At that point, the ELO system is used going forward. I might go in more details about the ELO system in another memo, but to summarize, you just need to know that you can earn or loose up to 32 points in a game, depending on the difference between your ranking and the ranking of the others, on how you perform against the system expectations. As you can see, changes are pretty small and smooth, so there is no big risk even if you are out of luck one night.

Some details to know:

  • There is little risk for an Established player to play with Provisional players, especially if the opponents have played only a few games before. The Established player's score will be almost unaffected. So you can play with beginners without any second thought. Smile
  • For the moment, the applet does not update the ranking information after each game. Therefore, it is normal to see your game history and ranks unchanged. No need to rush to the page when you beat Eric or Hadoken Wink . I run a script every 24 hours to recompute everything. Real-time update will be implemented shortly (Brice promised Wink ).
  • As there was not many games to test the system, I used all games, even aborted ones, as long as there was a score above 10.
  • All games are used for now, wherever the "Rated Game" check box was on or off during the game creation. Here again, this is to have the largest pool as possible. In the final version, only Rated Games will be used for ranking.
  • When we switch to the final version, all scores will be reset to 0.
  • It is possible (OK, highly likely!) that we shall adjust the equations during Beta. Your score will then be recomputed completely, which will impact your ranking (however, your game history will be preserved). You have been warned Wink
  • Here is how it currently works: when a game is completed, the winning player is the only winner, the 3 others are all considered losers. This appeared to us as the best solution for the Gang of Four specificities. We think that we should also introduce some modifiers depending on the game was a long and close one or not. Your opinion on this matter are welcome.
  • In the Game History, there are sometimes games will only 3 players. This is not a bug. This happens when you played against a new player who never confirmed his/her account registration. Unconfirmed accounts are vaporized after 7 days, this is why the player reference is gone.

I look forward to your feed-back and questions!

Yann

- Improvement in the game creation user interface: we had noticed that some players would enter their personnal password when creating a new game, which would cause the game to become a private one. Then the poor souls would wait forever for other players to join...
- Rankscore and history are now automatically updated at the end of each game Cool
- Server last lock-up is fixed.
- Piel Pikul's latest bug should be fixed now.

Lots of new features today (over 2 weeks of hard work) !

Main Features:

- Interrupted games can be resumed. This can be done directly from the lobby within 15 minutes after the interruption, by using a Resume Now button in the lobby. Beyond this 15 minutes window, you need to use the games history in the Scores page (see below)

- Resuming an interrupted game: from the games history of the Scores page, you can resume interrupted games (marked as "Aborted"). Click on the "Schedule..." link, and you can propose a time and date to the other players. The game will then appear as "Proposed for..." in their own game history. Then they can accept or ask for a change. When everybody has accepted the date and time, the game becomes "Scheduled for...". When the time is up, a "Join Now" link will appear. Clicking on it will take you directly to the table.

- Games Schedule page: this new page is in My Account, just below the Scores button. This shows two things: interrupted games that are being scheduled for resuming, and open scheduled games. Using the Schedule a New Game button, you can plan open games that others can join, and agree on a date and time with them. It works exactly like scheduling interrupted games, except that people can join or leave a game as long as it is not scheduled. Think of it as a convenient tool to set up rendez-vous.

- '?' tooltips button: in the lobby and in the games window, clicking on this button shows pop-up "tooltips" that gives help on elements.

- Help button: in the lobby, the help button brings up the Gang of Four summary cards in a slide show.

- Observe button: when you click on a game in progress, the Join button becomes Observe, and enables you to watch a game. You will see the hand of the best player and see the game as it goes. Note that you cannot chat in this mode, but that you can see the messages coming from the lobby (this way you know if anyone arrived in the lobby).

- Bell button: when the little bell icon is activated, your computer will beep (system beep) when a new user comes in. Click on the bell to turn it off.

- Find Players button: clicking on this button gives you some statistics about latest traffic, when the next open game is scheduled, etc. You also have a button to go directly to the Games Schedule page.

- Forum and Buy buttons: these are buttons that go directly to the Forums and Buy web pages.

- Player Information: when you click on a player's name, you see some information and statistics about him. For example, his preferred language, the time slot when he is active the most, his ranking, etc.

- New Ranking system: all ranking scores were recomputed, using all finished past games. For this reason, you will see a lower number of games than before. The main change in the computation is that the second player's score will generally go up too, and that there is no "drifting-to-zero" issue anymore. Note that ONLY finished games are used from now on. If you want to finish an interrupted game, use the new resuming feature Smile

Other details and bug fixes:

- Free chat is the default option now.
- Lots of various bug fixes (too long and boring to list here).

Please contact us at support@daysofwonder.com if you encounter problems. If you have questions, please post on this forum.

Have fun,

The Gang Team

Serious bug in 22nd release. Thu, 23 January 2003 09:20
Hello,

As you might have noticed, there was a serious defect in the last release, which prevented games to have more than 3 hands. Hopefully it may have been possible to resume those stuck games.

As the faulty programmer ( Embarassed ) I'd like to say that the bug has been fixed Smile and wanted to apologize about this mess (and yes, this is still a beta version, subject to problems).

Hello

The beta-test is almost finished, and there are a few bugs we can't reproduce on our test systems.

Especially the slowness while playing bug which seems to occur on Internet Explorer with the Micro$oft VM.

We need your help: if you experience this problem, please do the following:

  1. Setup IE to enable java console:
In the 'Tools' menu -> 'Internet Options' -> Advanced and check the 3 java relative checkboxes (namely logging, java console, and JIT)
  2. Restart fully IE by closing all its open windows.
  3. Connect to Gang of Four Online.
  4. Play until the game seems really slower than at the beginning.
  5. Open the Java Console (in the view menu), select this new window in order that it is topmost:

    1. Press the 'm' key.
    2. Press the 'g' key.
    3. Press the 'm' key.
    4. Press the 'f' key.
    5. Press the 'm' key.
    6. Press the 't' key.

  6. Select the console output and send it to support@daysofwonder.com. If you can't select the console output, just try to find the javalog.txt file which might be in c:\windows\java or similar.

Thanks for your help !
Happy game !
