Historical Background: Operation Exporter, the campaign of Syria lasted for a week and Allied troops had advanced deeply in the country. French Vichy General de Verdilhac, ordered a counter-attack in three directions : Merdjayoun, Deraa and Kuneitra. The battle-group of colonel Le Couteulx was in charge of the attack to Kuneitra, near the Golan heights. Composed with a tank squadron of 35 R-35 light tanks from the 7th RCA, a motorized infantry company of the III/17 RTS (Senegalese Infantry Regiment) and two Circassian cavalry squadrons, the battle-group Le Couteulx attacked on the 16th of June from the village of Khan Arembe. The city of Kuneitra was defended by the 1st Battalion, King's Own Rifles, equipped with an Italian captured anti-tank gun and two old armored cars. After a fierce battle which lasted all the day, the British battalion HQ was surrounded by the French, and the commanding officer decided to surrender in order to save his soldiers. Because of the bad situation near Damascus, the battle-group Le Couteulx had to leave Kuneitra on the 17th of June and finally, the city was reoccupied by another British battalion in the evening. The stage is set, the battle lines are drawn and you are in command. The rest is history.
