Historical Background:
The Soviet 163rd division had captured the village of Suomussalmi, but found itself deep inside Finnish territory. The Soviets sent the 44th Rifle division to aid the struggling 163rd. The Finnish 9th division destroyed the 163rd division and then turned their attention to the 44th division. The Finns blocked the road, which the Soviets attempted to break open with armor. They lost numerous tanks in frontal attacks. The Finns had placed mines on the road which stopped the column. As the Soviets attempted to retreat back to their own territory on January 7th, many froze trying to cross Lake Kiantajärvi. Mopping up took several days and consisted of capturing freezing and starving Ukrainians. The Finns captured a lot of Soviet equipment in this battle.
