Historical Background:
On the 27th of May, General Ringel, commander of the 5.Gebirgsjäger Division, ordered to Oberstleutnant Wittmann to make a Kampfgruppe with his Gebirgs-Artillerie Regt.95 and motorcycles platoons to advance toward east as quick as possible to relieve the Fallschirmjägers at Rethymno and Heraklion. On the 28th of May, Kampfgruppe Wittmann was blocked by some Layforce commandos units entrenched on the heights of Kalami. In the same time, Kampfgruppe Krakau attacked the village of Stilos defended by the 23rd New Zealand Battalion and some British tanks. When the Kampfgruppe Wittmann captured the bridge on the east of Kalami, the New Zealanders had to evacuate Stilos before to be outflanked and surrounded, and then they withdraw across the White mountains to Sphakia.
