Historical Background:
After the battle at Cape Gloucester, the 1st Marine Division was ordered to control the Willaumez Peninsula. So, the 5th Marine Regiment landed on a small beach near the village of Volupai (codenamed Red Beach) on the 6th March 1944. The Marines found a little resistance in this area : mines on the beach, a machine gun bunker on the hill "Little Mount Worri", some snipers in the jungle and one battery of heavy mortars (90mm) firing on the beach. Finally, the Marines controlled the beachhead in the evening, ready to advance on the trail to Bitokara the next day.
