Historical Background:
After the battle of San Michelle, the 2nd Moroccan Infantry Division had to take the Mount Pantano that the 34th US Infantry Division failed to capture. The 5th Moroccan Rifle Regiment (5 RTM) was ordered to attack on the 15th of December 1943. After a first setback, the attack was renewed on the 16th of December. In spite of the heavy fire of the German 557.Infanterie Regiment, well entrenched on the peaks, the Moroccan riflemen succeeded to reach the summit of the mountain and then to resist to several enemy counter-attacks. On the 17th of December, the 3rd battalion captured the north peak of the Pantano and reached the village of Cerasuolo while the 2nd battalion captured hill 940 and the Mount della Battuta. Mount Pantano was the first victory of the French in Italy.
