Historical Background:
While lieutenant Pfeifer realized, that he should fall back from the northern end of Stavelot Bridge, because his reserves are unable to catch up, due to heavy US opposition; ferocious fighting erupted between the advancing SS recon group, supported by Tigers and engineers (Kampfgruppe-Knittel) and the US force defending this part of the town. The Germans crossed the river Amblieve over the Petit-Spa Bridge, then they get off their vehicles, and they started their advance towards Stavelot.Artillery support was in form of three 150mm infantry support guns, and an 120mm mortar platoon. When they arrived at the western edge of the town, they met serious artillery fire, and bumped into the defenders of Chateau Rochettes, supported by five Shermans. The assault was halted. On December 19th, 2200 hours, the unification of German forces became impossible, because the Americans succesfuly blew a 7.5 m gap on the northern end of the bridge. Despite this setback, the Germans continued their advance on December 20th, and the Americans got into a serious situation, and they had to fall back, but the Germans were exhausted too and they got no reserves left, so their attack was slowed down due to heavy enemy artilleryfire(At the same time, Pfeifer's unit swimmed across the icy water of the Amblieve, to reach it's southern bank. This little adventure
cost 23 of his men.) Despite the fact, that the Germans were stopped, they were far from stopping here, and they launched a new assault, but this is another story....
