Summa - December 17, 1939

Historical Background:
The primary axis of the Soviet assault was intended to be from Lenningrad to Viipuri Finland's second largest city. However the Isthmus between the Gulf of Finland and Lake Ladoga is cut by a series of lakes joined by the Taipale River which reduces the land corridor to a bottleneck 12 miles wide in the vicinity of the village of Summa. The Russian General Yakovlev has around 200,000 men in the Isthmus just under half of whom will conduct the initial assault. The Finnish Commander Luitennant General Hugo ­Östermann has around 125,000 men in the Ithsmus but no tanks and few Antitank guns. Finns have to use four man molotov cocktail squads to halt Soviet tanks where no artillery is available. Defensive positions have been in preparation in this area for some time but due to budget constraints are not as strong as had been intended.
