Historical Background:
After the setback of operation Capri, Axis forces waited for the British assault on the Mareth line. This line was a French pre-war defensive line made up by field bunkers, located along Wadi Zigzaou between the Mediterranean sea and Matmata mountains. 1st Italian Army reinforced the line by adding a lot of trenches, minefields, barbed wire, field guns and antitank guns. On the 16th of March, general Montgomery launched VIIIth Army in a frontal assault on the Mareth line, operation Pugilist. During seven days, British soldiers were pinned down in a small bridgehead west of Wadi Zigzaou, due to the strong resistance of the 1st Italian Army. Operation Pugilist was a setback and Monty had to change his plan to win the battle with operation Supercharge II.
