Historical Background:
Late April 1945, 1st Ukrainian Front of Marshall Koniev was the south flank of the Soviet army racing towards Berlin. In their advance to Dresde, 52nd Soviet Army and 2nd Polish Army had to capture the city of Bautzen on the river Spree. From the 19th of April, the German garrison, under the command of Oberst Hoepke, was virtually surrounded by Soviet and Polish troops. During four days, fierce street fighting occurred in the city, Soviet troops advancing ineluctably to the castle, called Ortenburg, which was the main defensive place of the Germans. But finally, on the 23rd of April, a counter-attack of the LVII.Panzer Korps relieved the surrounded garrison.
