Historical Background: On mid-July 1938, Japanese diplomatic mission asked to the Soviet Union to withdraw the border troops placed recently on Bezymyannaya and Zaozyornaya Hills (Shachaofeng and Changkufeng Hills in Chinese) west of Lake Khasan, on the border with Mandchuria. Moscow didn't answer to the Japanese. This was called the "Changkufeng Incident". A first Japanese attack on the 29th of July was repelled but on the 31st of July, by a night attack, the Japanese 19th division assaulted the fortified positions of the 39th Soviet Rifle Corps and captured the two hills.
