Historical Background:
Linked up to Gavutu Island by a causeway, the island of Tanambogo was occupied by 240 Japanese, mainly aircrew and maintenance personnel from the seaplane base. A previous landing in the evening of the 7th August had failed and same surviving Marines withdrew to Gavutu. On the 8th of August in the afternoon, after an artillery fire support provided by USS San Juan, the 3rd Battalion 2nd Marines (3/2) attacked Tanambogo by landing from landing craft and using the causeway from Gavutu. Two light tanks M3 supported the Marines but one of them was surrounded by some 50 Japanese and then was annihilated. The battle continued on hill 121 where was entrenched in caves the remaining of the Japanese garrison. Tanambogo Island fell in the Marines hands on the 9th of August after a hand to hand night fighting.
