Historical Background:
While 1st Marine Regiment securized the area of the Cape Gloucester airfield, the 7th Marine Regiment had consolidated the defensive perimeter of the landing area, included Target Hill, a small hill near Yellow Beach. On the 2nd of January 1944, Japanese colonel Katayama decided to recapture Target Hill, but the attack was delayed because the two battalions ordered for the assault ( 2/53 and 2/141) were not arrived in their attacking positions. Coming from Aogiri Ridge, the Japanese attacked before dawn, with the support of mortars, mainly towards Target Hill. This was the defensive area of Company A, 1/7 Marines, with particularly the 3rd Platoon defending the hill. But a Marines machine gun position was in front of the Japanese attack and was the cornerstone of the US defense. The Marines positions resisted to the assault, with the support of a mortar battery. At dawn, the Japanese assault had failed and Target Hill was still in the hands of the Marines.
