Historical Background:
In the night before D-Day, Lieutenant-colonel Thomas Shanley of the 508th PIR landed near Picauville and regrouped all paratroopers he could find then he led them to Hill 30, which was the reassembly point of his regiment. He reached it in the evening and organized a defensive position with about 300 paratroopers. Two German battalions of the 1057.Rgt (91.ID) besieged them soon. In the morning of 7th June, the first German attack was repelled at Port Filiolet and one Panzer III was destroyed at the crossroad. In the afternoon, the Germans made a second attack in the same sector. In the morning of 8th June, they attacked Hill 30 in the center by the road of Picauville. A US counter-attack led by Shanley himself was needed to repelled the enemy. Under the continuous fire of German mortars, Shanley lost more and more paratroopers, KIA or wounded, but the battalion resisted until the morning of 10th June when Colonel Lindquist arrived with the I/508th. They were relieved !
