Historical Background:
In the night 5th to 6th June 1944, the 82nd US Airborne Division was dropped west of Sainte-Mère-Eglise. A large number of paratroopers was horrified to fall in a flooded area around the Merderet River. Ltc Timmes of the 2/507 PIR had landed west of the marshes, he gathered some paratroopers of his battalion and made a defensive position in an orchard near the "grey" castle. One of the main objectives of the 505th PIR was to capture the bridge on the Merderet River and the causeway of La Fière. The US paratroopers under the command of Captain Dolan could capture the manor of La Fière at mid-day but a German counter-attack by a battalion of the 1057. Infantry Regiment (91.ID) with the support of three R-35 light tanks of the 100.Panzer Abteilung occurred in the afternoon. Once the light tanks were destroyed by a bazooka team, the counter-attack stopped and the causeway stayed in the no man's land.
