Historical Background: Despite of the capture of the Deir el Shein "box" on the 1st of July 1942, the Deutsche Afrika Korps failed to break through the British lines near El Alamein. Rommel planned to continue the attack on the next day in spite of the weakness of his army. But General Auchinleck wanted to retake the tactical initiative by launching a counter-attack with all his motorized units. The Ruweisat Ridge was the place of this frontal battle between the two armies. The 21.Panzer Division on the ridge was attacked by the 22nd Armoured Brigade, in the South, the 15. Panzer Division was attacked by the 4th Armoured Brigade reinforced by the "Robcol" column and in the north, the 90.Leichte Afrika Division was in front of the 1st South African Brigade defensive positions. The Auchinleck counter-attack failed, the 21.stayed on the ridge and the 90. Leichte took the positions of the South Africans after a difficult day for them. Nevertheless, the Deutsche Afrika Korps was exhausted, only 26 panzers were still operational but Rommel decided once again to continue the attack on the next day. The stage is set, the battle lines are drawn, and you are in command. The rest is history.
