Historical Background:
30th of April 1941.
After the setback of the first attack of the fortified camp of Tobruk at King's Cross, General Rommel prepared a new attack. Beginning by an air bombing by "Stukas", the offensive was launched on the evening with four battle groups : in the north, the Italian Infantry Division "Brescia", in the center, the main attack with 15.Panzer Division on the left and 5.Leichte Division on the right, and in the south the Italian Armored Division "Ariete". In front of them, the 26th Australian Infantry Brigade, entrenched in bunkers and foxholes, was waiting for the attack resolutely. After some initial success for Axis troops (capture of strongpoints S7 and S9 by the "Brescia", hill 209, R1, R2, R3 by the 'Afrika Korps, R4, R5 and R6 by Bersaglieri of the "Ariete" Division), the attack was stopped by the vigorous resistance of Australian soldiers who didn't hesitate to counter-attack with the support of some available tanks. Finally a sand storm covered the battlefield. On the 4th of May , to avoid more casualties, Rommel ordered his troops to entrench on place. This attack was a new setback, during several months, Tobruk remained the main problem of Rommel in Cyrenaica.
