Historical Background:
During the night of 23rd of December 1941, company Takano of the Special Naval Landing Force landed on the small island of Wilkes, in the western end of the atoll of Wake, in the same time than the main body of SNLF on the Wake Island. Japanese troops captured quickly Battery F whose personnel withdrew in the brush after sabotaged the guns. But next the Japanese were stopped in their advance towards Battery L by the fire of a machine-gun situated west of the beach. Captain Platt, Marine officer in command of Wilkes defense, gathered his troops to make a new line of defense. Then, around 05h30, he launched a counterattack towards Battery F. Simultaneously, the platoon of 1st Lt McAlistair, reinforced by the personnel of Battery F, attacked on the other side of the Japanese pocket. The two Marine groups joined on the Battery F and cleared the enemy pocket, counting 94 dead Japanese. The landing had been repulsed on Wilkes but, because of no radio contact, the US command on Wake though that Wilkes had fallen.
