Historical Background:
Created in the 1st of November 1939 in the military camp of La Valbonne, the 11th Infantry Regiment of Foreign Legion (11 REI)was attached in April 1940 at the 6th DINA of General de Verdihac. On the 20th May, the 11 REI, under the command of Colonel Robert, relieved the 14 RTA in the bois d'Inor. On the 27th May, in the early morning and after a huge artillery bombardment, the German infantrymen of the 56.Infanterie Division attacked the bois d'Inor. During 12 hours of fighting, mostly with bayonets, the legionnaires held their positions and repulsed the enemy on its starting line, inflicting heavy losses. For the Germans, it was "the green hell of Inor". The day after, General de Verdihac sent a short message to Colonel Robert : "Bravo la Légion" (Well done, Legion).
