Historical Background: Two Free French battalions were involved in the battle of Keren in March 1941. With the 7th Indian Infantry Brigade, they attacked the northern defenses of the Italian fortified camp. After a first battle and the capture of Mount Gegghiro the night before, the battalion of the Foreign Legion was ordered to capture as soon as possible Mount Enghiahat which reaches 2154 m at its highest point. The attack was again in the night and the Foreign Legion captured "le Grand Willy" pass but could not captured Mount Enghiahat, which was fiercely defended by two Italian battalions. A new attack was attempted on the 17th of March by the 7th Indian Brigade, but it was another setback.
