Historical Background:
The soldiers of the 67th Alpine Battalion (40th Infantry Division) were ordered on the 5th of June 1940 to defend strong points in Bezencourt and Guibermesnil against the German offensive coming from the Somme river. Three companies were entrenched in the two villages and in the wood in the middle of the defense area. From the morning of the 6th June, contact was made with the enemy and the German artillery fired on French positions. The enemy infantry attack was made in the afternoon, but the French resisted in their positions. With the night, the Germans stopped their attack and at 21h30, the French battalion received the order to withdraw on the Bresle river.
