Historical Background:
On the 26th of June 1944, General Montgomery launched Operation Epsom, offensive toward the Odon River by the VIIIth Army Corps of General O'Connor to bypass and then capture Caen by the south. The 15th (Lowland) Infantry Division had to breakthrough the German lines between Saint Manvieu and Cheux to allowed the 11th Armoured Division to advance to the Odon. Scottish soldiers of the 46th Brigade had Cheux and le Haut du Bosc as objectives and fought against the SS Pionnier battalion of the SS Panzer Division Hitlerjugend. The 44th Brigade with objective Saint Manvieu, fought against SS grenadiers of the 1/26. In spite of the heavy British artillery barrage, the Scottish soldiers had a lot of difficulties to reach their objectives : several tanks in support were destroyed by mines and the SS defenders fought to the end. In the evening, the Scottish soldiers captured Cheux but not le Haut du Bosc and there was still fighting in the ruins of St Manvieu. Nevertheless, the two SS battalions were virtually destroyed.
