Historical Background:
In the beachhead of Salerno, the 36th US Infantry Division had captured the village of Altavilla and Hill 424 in the evening of the 11th September. But, the day after, German soldiers of the 29.Panzer Grenadier Division coming from Calabre attacked US soldiers of 142nd Infantry. Under the heavy fire and the assault of the enemy US soldiers abandoned the village and Hill 424. The US division launched a new attack on the 13th of September and recaptured Altavilla for a short while and German soldiers of Panzer Grenadier Regiment 15 repulsed the US in the evening. On the 14th of September, the Germans continued their attack toward the seaside but US soldiers entrenched behind La Cosa creek stopped the German advance. Altavilla and Hill 424 were finally taken on the 19th of September by the paratroopers of the 82nd Airborne.
