Historical Background: II Canadian Corps entered in the battle, south of Caen, during operation "Atlantic". German lines consisted at that time in strongpoints into villages of the plain and Verrieres Ridge. During operation "Spring", the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division had to conquer this ridge and more particularly Mont-Royal Fusiliers battalion (FMR) who was in charge to seize Beauvoir and Trotteval farms on the German first line. On the 20th of July, FMR succeeded to take the two farms defended by infantrymen of 272.ID, but quickly Canadians soldiers were isolated in the no man's land and were under the fire of German tanks entrenched in the heights. A German counter-attack by panzergrenadiers of 1.SS Panzer Division wiped out the Canadian defenders and recaptured the two farms. On the 24th of July, Mont Royal Fusiliers took again Beauvoir farm while Royal Hamilton Light Infantry captured Trotteval farm then Verrieres village. On the same day, the Black Watch of Canada were decimated on the slope of Verrieres Ridge and failed to capture Fontenay-le-Marmion. Verrieres Ridge had cost more than 1200 casualties to Canadians in this battle. The stage is set, the battle lines are drawn, and you are in command. The rest is history.
